Free, open-source software (FOSS) is finally a trusted solution in the enterprise, but primarily only in infrastructure layers. The promise of a completely open-source enterprise is nigh, but the nagging question remains: Will it work as a business for the technology industry? New business models are now appearing that bridge the old world of enterprise software with the promise and customizations of open source.
On Sept. 29, about 75 entrepreneurs, executives and investors will gather at our San Francisco offices to discuss when IT applications and infrastructure based on open source will realistically form the complete IT delivery chain. A few speakers will lead the debate, but overall emphasis will be on participation and comments by all those invited. Our goal is to bring together elements of the ecosystem — vendors, buyers, investors and project leaders — to discuss what the next opportunities could be and what still needs to be done.
