Today in Connected Consumer
Every six months or so, analyst Gene Munster seems to write the same report about the imminent arrival of an Apple HDTV and, like before, I’m still not buying it. As I wrote last year, the dynamics of the TV hardware market do not play to Apple’s strengths, and I think they’ll stay away from that market with a 10 foot pole. The market requires too many SKUs, needs too much production capacity, and doesn’t turn over fast enough for Apple’s tastes (consumers buy new HDTVs every 5-7 years). Throw in the high-price Apple would need to charge in a rapidly commoditizing market, and it doesn’t add up.
