Why would YouTube seemingly put so much effort into an HTML 5 mobile version of itself optimized for the iPhone when the iPhone already comes with an Apple-built YouTube app pre-installed? And why would it then seemingly go out of its way to tweak Apple in a new video showing an iPhone user passing over the pre-installed app in favor of the new mobile version? Because the mobile version runs in a browser, and Google owns the browser thanks to its strength in search. Non-browser apps, on the other hand, are Apple’s turf. Why encourage more people to abandon the browser in favor of apps?
