A federal antitrust probe looking into Apple’s alleged anti-competitive practices has been broadened to include iAd, according to a piece this morning in the Wall Street Journal. The same story speculates that Apple may avoid a formal investigation by changing its iPhone SDK to allow developers to use tools like Adobe Flash. I think Apple’s locked-down strategy certainly deserves a closer look by federal regulators, especially when it comes to the company’s attempt to kneecap competing ad networks with iAd. But I’m also confused: if Apple’s mobile advertising play may be anti-competitive, why do regulators continue to focus on the Google/AdMob deal?
