Online privacy is quickly entrenching itself atop the legislative tech agenda both in the U.S. and abroad, putting pressure on web-based companies. But the companies don’t seem to helping their own cause. Google’s dismissive response to complaints from regulators in 10 foreign capitals, including several major U.S. trading partners, is likely to prove a tactical, strategic and legal mistake. Here at home, Facebook’s many misadventures in privacy land has now attracted the attention of powerful U.S. legislators in an election year–a place you do not want to be. And Blippy really isn’t helping.
