Today in Cloud
There’s a lot of news today (including from IBM, Intel, StrataScale and startup NorthScale), but my money is on Rackspace’s music-industry-specific service as the most meaningful. My reasoning is that the tried-and-true strategy of targeting specific markets could be a great way for general-purpose cloud or hosting providers to boost their customer bases. Drilling further down, providers might start targeting ad hoc sales during peak traffic periods, like the Oscars, or CES, or whatever other events might draw large amounts of site traffic in particular inustries. Cloud computing has the potential to be great, but it’s not yet so great that providers can abandon sales strategies and expect all potential customers to come to them.
