Google is hoping to quell a revolt by Android developers that seems to be gaining steam every day. The rift opened last week when Google sent a cease-and-desist letter to a developer who was bundling proprietary offerings such as Gmail and YouTube in an after-market firmware product. That move gave birth to the Open Android Alliance, a faction of developers looking to replace all proprietary, closed source Android apps with open-based offerings. Such a move may have been inevitable given the combination of proprietary and open source technologies within Android, but I think Google will need to move quickly to shore up its developer relationships or risk losing the coders to other platforms.
