Today in Mobile

Vodafone this morning outlined a new mobile web service aimed at competing directly with the App Store, Android and Nokia’s Ovi. It’s an ambitious move for Vodafone, which has been losing customers to sexier, more nimble European operators, but it’s a huge lift for LiMo, the Linux-based operating system that will power the first two Vodafone 360 phones. LiMo is often left out of the discussion when it comes to the battle of the smartphone OSes, but today it announced deployments from Verizon Wireless, NTT DoCoMoo and a handful of others in coming months. I think the next year will determine whether LiMo can compete with the higher-profile players or whether it will be an also-ran.
