Today in Cleantech

Nexsan and FalconStor are stacking two technologies that promote storage efficiency, namely massive array of idle disks (MAID) and data de-duplication. It’s not the first time, MAID pioneer Copan did it nearly two years ago (also with FalconStor). Yet MAID hasn’t been met with the same fervor as de-duplication. Remember that bidding war between EMC and NetApp? It was Data Domain’s hot de-duplication tech that fanned the flames. MAID just can’t seem to gain that kind of traction despite making a compelling green IT case for years and support from Hitachi Data Systems, Fujitsu, and even EMC. Simply put, it’s a tougher sell. So while it makes sense to combine the two technologies to drive storage efficiency, it will take more than de-duplication to raise MAID’s profile.
