Apple has once again stirred up controversy and drawn the ire of developers by playing gatekeeper with its App Store. The company earlier this week offered “Hottest Girls,” a risque offering that appeared to signal Apple’s willingness to lean on the iPhone’s new parental controls instead of employing its sometimes arbitrary approval policies. The app was then pulled offline, prompting the publisher to cite unexpected demand that overwhelmed the servers. But Apple stepped forward yesterday to say it removed the app, citing “inappropriate content” that was delivered to users after the offering had been approved. Look for more howls of contempt from the developer community in response.
