And while most companies don’t have the financial resources the networking giant has, there is one element of Cisco’s success that companies of all sizes should try to learn from: its consistent track record of playing to its strengths. Cisco never enters a market where it doesn’t leverage its existing assets, strengthen its existing product offerings and get a new growth market in which to participate.

However, we’re smart enough to know there are already a lot of very good market research and advisory services firms out there giving customized and well-needed guidance to their clients. In creating a new service, we knew building an in-house team of consultants or analysts would not leverage our core strengths nor fill a need in the market. Our research partner approach — which we call the GigaOM Analyst Network — allows us tap into the knowledge and expertise of the many great firms out there to bring a new type of service to the individual subscriber.
